Where to Buy Cheap Furniture Online
1. Overstock
What they offer: Scrolling through pages of overstock.com, youâll see itâs got every type of home furnishing you could want or needâfrom mattresses and kitchen gadgets to bar carts and fun dĂ©cor. And the best part? It has stuff thatâs great quality at a great price. You can find area rugs, full comforter sets and even chandeliers for less than $40.
Why I like them: Overstock has a two-decade history of offering quality pieces at affordable prices. Not only that, but theyâve also been named one of the âmost trustworthy companiesâ by Forbes.1 I donât know about you, but trustworthy is a word I like to hear when Iâm making big purchases online.
Shipping and returns:Â A big reason Overstock is my go-to is this: free shipping! Overstock offers free shipping on orders over $49.99 in the lower 48 states (sorry, folks who are reading this from Alaska and Hawaii).2Â Plus, if you donât like what you ordered, Overstock has a 30-day return policy for a full refundâbut you will have to pay for shipping.3Â
2. Wayfair
What they offer: Wayfair carries trendy-looking furniture, dĂ©cor, cookware and appliances perfect for redecorating your home on a budget. Your best bet on Wayfair is to check out its massive sale section where you can score discounted items like a comfy memory foam mattress. Youâll never sleep more soundly than when you know you got a great deal!
Why I like them: I feel like everyone and their mom have been talking about the furniture theyâve ordered off Wayfair lately. Not everything is super cheap, but overall, their prices are way fair. (Sorry, I couldnât resist.) You can even customize your own furniture on thereâthough, be warned, thatâll cost you extra.
Shipping and returns:Â Wayfair offers free shipping to the lower 48 states for orders over $35 (with some exceptions for certain items).4Â Most full-priced items are eligible for returns and full refunds (minus shipping) within 30 days of delivery.5
3. Amazon
What they offer: Amazon offers some of the best inexpensive furniture on the web, with plenty of pieces that still look nice. I found a faux marble coffee table on there for less than $150 and a super chic entertainment center for about $240 that looks like it cost over $800. And with thousands of retailers, the possibilities of what you can find on Amazon are truly endless.
Why I like them: We all know you can get just about anything on Amazon, and affordable furniture is no exception. The best part about Amazon is that itâs usually extra speedy with the delivery, especially if you have an Amazon Prime subscription. Your new couch could be at your door the very next day!
Start budgeting with EveryDollar today!
Shipping and returns:Â If you have an Amazon Prime subscription, buying cheap furniture on Amazon is a no-brainer because youâll get the luxury of fast and free shipping no matter the cost.6Â If you donât have Prime, you can still be eligible for free shipping if your order is big enough (or youâre willing to wait a little longer).7Â And you can return most items sold by Amazon within 30 days, but be aware that third-party sellers on Amazon sometimes have different policies.8
4. Dot & Bo
What they offer: Dot & Bo is another great website to find fun, inexpensive furniture. And when I say fun, I really do mean it. I found this awesome furry yak ottoman on there that would be absolutely perfect for a childâs room (or your inner childâI donât judge!).
Why I like them: Aside from the silly stuff, most of the other furniture pieces on Dot & Bo scream âmodern luxuryâ at a price that wonât make you scream. And be sure to check out its huge clearance section for some extra discounts.
Shipping and returns:Â Dot & Bo shipping costs usually range from $3.99 to $10, but keep your eye out for free shipping promos.9Â You can return or exchange most items up to 30 days after your item was delivered.10
5. AllModern
What they offer: AllModern is filled with tons ofâyou guessed itâmodern furniture and home dĂ©cor thatâs so stylish, itâll have any trendy Millennial squealing with joy.
Why I like them: If youâre a sucker for mid-century modern style like me, AllModern is a solid choice. It may be a little pricier than the other cheap furniture sites on this list. But if you do some digging, you can find great deals on their site.
Shipping and returns:Â AllModern offers free shipping to the lower 48 states on most orders over $35.11Â You can return most items within 30 days of delivery for a full refund or store credit, but youâll have to pay for return shipping costs.12
6. Etsy
What they offer: Did you know that Etsy has more than just jewelry, scarves and watercolor prints of your dog? They also sell handmade, one-of-a-kind furnitureâeverything from hardwood tables and desks to upcycled dressers and bed frames.
Why I like it: You might hear handmade and think expensive. But Etsy actually has great prices for the quality! And you can always filter your search for whatâs on sale. Plus, since most of the furniture isnât mass-produced, youâre snagging a unique piece that your guests will be oohing and aahing over.
Shipping and returns: Shipping and return policies depend on the individual seller.
Where to Buy Cheap Furniture In Store or Online
7. IKEA
What they offer: IKEA offers impressive prices on everything from sleek furniture staples to unique dĂ©cor that looks more expensive than it really is. And while IKEA furniture may be infamous for its hard-to-follow assembly instructions, youâll find yourself whipping out engineering skills you didnât know you had for cheap desks and sofas.
Why I like them: If youâve ever been lucky enough to visit an IKEA, I donât have to tell you why itâs got an almost cult-like fan base (especially if youâve tried those Swedish meatballs). And if you want even more savings, you can join the free rewards program, IKEA Family, to get member benefits like discounts and 90-day price protection.13
Shipping and returns:Â IKEAâs shipping rates depend on the weight and size of the furniture you order.14Â A great thing about IKEA is its generous return policy, offering a full refund on unopened products returned within 365 days or on opened products returned within 180 days.15
8. Target
What they offer: While youâve got to be careful to not fall for impulse buys at Target, itâs a great place to find fun, inexpensive furniture and knickknacks that will spruce up any room.
Why I like them: Shopping on Targetâs website is awesome because you can shop by collection, which offers tons of possibilities for matching furniture. You can also get an extra 5% off if you have the Target debit card (the key word is debit card, never credit!).
Shipping and returns: Target offers free two-day shipping on many items if you spend over $35, which is pretty easy if youâre buying furniture.16 You can return most items in store or by mail within 90 days for a full refund.17
9. Home Depot
What they offer: Home Depot isnât just for toolsâitâs also a destination for cheap furniture finds. Home Depot has over 2,300 stores across the U.S., so thereâs a pretty good chance thereâs one near you.18 And under that big olâ orange sign, youâll find affordable furniture and dĂ©cor for your bedroom, bathroom, living room and moreâincluding bed frames and bathroom vanities for under $100.
Why I like them: While Home Depot may not carry a wide variety in their stores, their website is filled with thousands of items. Plus, the site lets you shop furniture by width, style or color. We love the specificity.
Shipping and returns:Â If you donât find what youâre looking for in Home Depotâs store, most of their online items can be delivered to your house. Shipping costs depend on the size and weight of your order as well as how fast you want it.19Â You can also have your order shipped to the store for pickup. For returns, just take your furniture back to the Home Depot store within 30 days for a refund or exchange, or you can print a Home Depot shipping label at home and make your return through UPS.20
10. Big Lots
What they offer: You might think Iâm being crazy here, but donât sleep on Big Lots, folks. Itâs a great place to find really cheap name-brand furniture, especially if youâre looking for a full sectional sofa that wonât cost you an arm and a leg.
Why I like them: Big Lots has great weekly deals that slash its already low prices in half, and tons of coupons are available if you sign up for its free rewards program. If youâre trying to redecorate your home on a tight budget, Big Lots is your new best friend (condolences to your old best friend).
Shipping and returns:Â Big Lots offers the option to pick up some furniture items in store for free, and others can be shipped for a fee.21Â Whether you bought it in person or online, you can return your Big Lots furniture at the store or by mail within 30 days for a full refund or after 30 days for store credit.22
11. Walmart
What they offer: Walmart has a massive stock of staple furniture and home dĂ©cor items thatâs pretty hard to ignore. I mean, seriously, could you love anything more than a love seat thatâs less than $200? I canât think of much . . . except maybe a TV stand under $70. YepâWalmart has both of those things.
Why I like them: No matter what youâre looking for, I guarantee Walmart has it. And as a bonus, you can sift through all the cheap furniture by room, style or brand on their website.
Shipping and returns:Â Your shipping time and costs depend on what you order, but some items are eligible for free shipping (for orders over $35).23Â And with the convenience of over 4,700 stores across the U.S., you can skip the mail return and bring any unwanted items to a Walmart store within 90 days for a full refund or exchangeâjust be sure to hold onto that receipt.24
12. T.J. Maxx/HomeGoods
What they offer: T.J. Maxx and HomeGoods (both owned by parent company TJX) have chic and modern furniture for discount prices. Why pay full price when you can be a Maxxinista, am I right? But please, for the love of all that is good, stay smart and say no to the TJX credit card pitch at the register.
Why I like them: T.J. Maxx and HomeGoods are both great places to find niche items you can swap in for existing pieces to totally transform your home. For instance, you can cover a basic lamp you already have with a woven lampshade, or throw all those books currently piled on your ottoman into a sleek wooden storage table that looks expensive.
Shipping and returns:Â T.J. Maxxâs shipping fees are usually based on weight and distance, but they likely wonât tack on more than $10.99 to your order and should arrive within 5â10 days.25Â You can return purchases within 30 days (with your receipt) for a full refund.26
13. Kohlâs
What they offer: Yep, Kohlâs has more than just clothes. They sell furniture for your living room, bedroom, dining room, office and more. And if youâve got a kidâs room to decorate, bet on Kohlâs as the spot to find cheap kidsâ furniture. Theyâve got all the fun stuff too, like beanbag chairs, fluffy animal seats and colorful storage drawers perfect for hiding all those toys.
Why I like them: Compared to Target and Walmart, I feel like Kohlâs doesnât get enough credit. It offers everything you could want or need for a home makeover. Plus, itâs a top-notch option if youâre on a tighter budget. Donât forget your Kohlâs Cash!
Shipping and returns:Â Kohlâs offers free standard shipping (three to six days) on most orders over $49.27Â But if you live near a Kohlâs, you could buy online and have your item shipped to the store to skip shipping costs.28Â Kohlâs allows you to return most items in store or online within 90 days of purchase for a refund.29
14. Ashley Furniture
What they offer: Ashley Furniture is far from a secretâtheyâve got hundreds of stores around the U.S. and are known for having a wide selection of moderately priced furniture. In fact, Ashley has more than two dozen options for sofas under $500 on their website. Thatâs a great deal!
Why I like them: While some of their options may not exactly fit the bill for cheap furniture, Ashley has a massive inventory. Youâre guaranteed to stumble on some budget finds, and thatâs why I think theyâre one of the top places to shop for a cheap home makeover.
Shipping and returns: Most furniture items on Ashleyâs website qualify for free shipping to the lower 48 states, while shipping fees to Alaska and Hawaii range by how much you spend.30 And if youâre not happy with your new furniture, you can return it to Ashley for a refund (possibly minus shipping fees) within 30 days of delivery, unless itâs a clearance itemâthose are final sale.31
15. Costco/BJâs
What they offer: Warehouse stores like Costco or BJâs might not come to mind when youâre looking for furniture, but donât be fooledâtheyâve got some great deals. Of course, you can only buy furniture at Costco or BJâs if youâre a member, which can cost you anywhere from $55 to $120 per year. But with that membership, you get access to plenty of affordable furniture items.
Why I like them: As wholesalers, theyâre way less likely than big-name furniture stores to have outrageous pricing markups. And getting cheaper furniture is just another amazing perk of my Costco membership (though itâs hard to beat the $1.50 hot dog and soda combo).
Shipping and returns:Â Costco and BJâs offer a wide variety of delivery options on their websites, including adding options for carriers to set up your furniture for you, with costs calculated by weight and locationâor you can have them shipped to the store for pickup.32,33Â You can return most purchases to Costco within 90 days for a full refund, though certain items have their own time frames.34 BJâs accepts returns for up to a year on most items.35
16. World Market
What they offer: World Market is known for their specialty imported goods from around the globeâand that includes furniture. They have a wide selection of sofas, sectionals, tables and more. Now, not everything is a steal, but theyâve got some great finds in their Sale section (and frequent promo codes). I found a classy velvet love seat that usually sells for $700 for half the cost!
Why I like them: With World Market, youâre getting international luxury without luxury pricesâespecially if youâre on the hunt for more artisan dĂ©cor. And when people ask where you got your coffee table, you can casually say, âOh, I just had it I shipped in from France.â
Shipping and returns: Shipping costs depend on the size and weight of the items and how much you spend.36 Right now, they only ship to the lower 48 states. World Market will refund you for any returns within 60 days of purchase.37
17. Bobâs Discount Furniture
What they offer: I donât know who Bob is, but heâs got a decent cheap furniture selection. No matter the room, Bobâll hook you up with pieces that fit your exact space and budget. He even has plenty of outdoor furniture to choose from.
Why I like them: If youâre wanting to furnish an entire room, Bobâs Discount Furniture is a great place to check out. Theyâve got living room, bedroom, dining room and office sets that donât cost a fortune. Plus, thereâs an Outlet section on their website with even steeper discounts. High five, Bob!
Shipping and returns: With over 170 stores in the U.S., you might have a Bobâs Discount Furniture close by where you can pick up your orders for free. Unfortunately, shipping to your home isnât exactly cheap. BOBtastic Delivery starts at $39.99 and increases depending on the cost of the order.38 And just a heads-up: You canât return most furniture once itâs delivered.39
Where to Buy Cheap Furniture Secondhand
Itâs time to bust out that famous saying thatâs been around as long as time itself: âOne personâs trash is another personâs treasure.â
Well, when it comes to furniture and appliances, thereâs some real treasure to be found by shopping secondhand. And donât let the idea of buying someone elseâs used furniture creep you out. You can find some amazing quality pieces at a major discount!
18. Habitat for Humanity ReStore
What they offer: Youâll probably have to visit your local Habitat for Humanity ReStore to check out the inventory, although some stores will have websites or Facebook pages where theyâll post their furniture stock. Pro tip: If youâve got your eye on something at the ReStore but you feel like itâs a bit over your budget, just wait a couple of weeks. These stores are always changing their prices.
Why I like them: Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit all about helping out people in your community, so you know your dollars are going to a cause greater than your home makeover. Thatâs a win-win situation for anyone!
Shipping and returns:Â The Habitat ReStore doesnât ship furniture, but some stores do have a delivery option if you need help getting the furniture to your home. As for returns, youâll have to check in with your local ReStore since each one has a different policy.
19. Goodwill
What they offer: My advice for buying cheap furniture at Goodwill is pretty much the same as the ReStore. Keep in mind, the inventory at Goodwill depends on where youâre shopping. But if youâve got an open schedule and time to do some digging, youâll probably find some great cheap furniture items.
Why I like them: If youâre crafty, you might even find some fixer-upper pieces that you can turn into luxury-looking items. Heck, Iâve watched what some of those home improvement DIY magicians can do with secondhand furniture on TikTok. Donât be afraid to try some stuff out!
Bonus: If youâre handy and want to make some extra cash, you can buy furniture super cheap at Goodwill, fix it up, take some nice photos, and resell it for a profit on Facebook Marketplace or Craigslist!
Shipping and returns:Â Youâre probably going to buy furniture in person at a Goodwill store, but you can buy some stuff online or through auctions too. In that case, the shipping rate will be decided by the Goodwill location.40Â The same is true for return policies.41
20. Facebook Marketplace/Craigslist
What they offer: Instead of having to visit a secondhand store in person, you can easily browse Facebook Marketplace or Craigslist to find exactly what youâre looking for. A shabby chic kitchen table? Thereâs one five minutes away! An antique tea cart? You can bet someone is selling one. Just try to act as fast as possible on these sites since the best items will get snatched up fast!
Why I like them: The number one reason Facebook Marketplace and Craigslist are great places to get cheap furniture: negotiating power. And some of my best finds have been on Facebook Marketplace, including a gently used West Elm coffee table, West Elm media stand, and a Peloton! Itâs also one of the best ways to sell furniture you donât want anymore.
Shipping and returns: Because youâre dealing with individual sellers, shipping and returns depend on the specific item youâre buying. But if you use onsite checkout through Facebook, you might have Purchase Protection for any items you donât receive or that come damaged.42
What to watch out for: You need to be careful when buying furnitureâor anything reallyâon Facebook or Craigslist. There are a lot of people who will try to scam you. So, remember these tips:
- Donât pay anything until youâve checked out the furniture yourself.
- Always look at the userâs profile and make sure they have a legitimate, non-creepy photo of themselves and a location listed thatâs in your general area.
- Try to meet in public spaces, and bring a friend with you if possible for safety.
21. Kaiyo
What they offer: Kaiyo is an online marketplace for high-quality, pre-owned furniture. Because theyâre picky about what furniture they take, youâll find better stuff than you would at Goodwill. They also make it easy to search by brandâso you can snag that West Elm table or Crate & Barrel dresser for way less.
Why I like them: Kaiyo is a great place to get secondhand furniture because they professionally clean each item. That means you donât have to worry about accidentally getting a headboard with bedbugs or a couch that smells like smoke. Plus, they plant a tree for every order!
Shipping and returns: Kaiyo offers white-glove delivery service for the greater New York City, Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington D.C. areas.43 You just need to spend at least $200 (before taxes and fees) to qualify for deliveryâotherwise you can pay the difference. If you live outside of their service areas, you might be eligible for delivery through one of Kaiyoâs third-party carriers. In that case, shipping costs depend on your zip code and the items you purchase.
22. Estate or Yard Sale
The internet is a great place to find cheap furniture, but a good old-fashioned estate or yard sale will never go out of style. Make sure you show up early to snag the best items and use all your best bargaining tactics.
If you donât see any yard sale signs around your neighborhood, search âestate sales near meâ on Google. Youâd be surprised how much is out there! And as a bonus, you may be able to reserve some items online or buy them through an auction.
Tips for Buying Cheap Furniture
Check out the website first (if possible).
Starting your furniture shopping online is the way to go, even when youâre looking at furniture brands that have physical store locations. Thatâs because itâs way easier to find the items you want, read customer reviews, and search through deals on the web. And then, if thereâs a store near you, you can check out the products for yourself. (After all, itâs nice to make sure that the couch is as comfy as it looks!)
Inspect everything.
Itâs possible to find high-quality, low-cost furniture, but youâve got to know what to look out for and where to make compromises. Check all drawers and cabinets to make sure they open and close smoothly. And avoid buying anything that looks like itâs stuck together by glue. If you buy something online and it arrives and itâs a big piece of junk, return it! It isnât worth the bargain if it falls apart after a weekâs worth of use.
Ask for a discount.
Itâs true what they say: âYouâll never know if you donât ask.â No matter where youâre buying cheap furniture, ask for a discount. Best case? You get a great deal. Worst case? They say no, and itâs maybe slightly awkward for, like, one second. Itâs always worth a try. (Look up Rejection Therapy if you want to get really good at this!)
P.S. If youâre shopping online, ask for a discount using the online chat feature or use a browser plug-in like Honey that will test out promo codes for you!
Pay in full.
You may be tempted to do an installment payment plan to buy your furniture (like Klarna and Afterpay). But you want to steer clear of these! Second to car dealerships, furniture stores are one of the most common places where youâll run into a gazillion sketchy zero-percent financing options, like $0 down or 90-days-same-as-cash.
Donât fall for it. Youâll completely lose out on a great furniture deal the second you decide to start paying interest on it. Itâs a major wallet mistake. I want you to own your furniture, and when you âbuyâ it with debt, itâll own you.
The best way to buy furniture is to pay cash (in full at the time of purchase) for every couch, TV and end tableâevery time. Donât have the money right now? Set aside cash in a sinking fund each month until you have enough to buy the item youâve got your eye on.
My favorite budgeting tool, EveryDollar, makes it super easy to save up for any purchase. And itâs free! (Yes, really. Go check it out!) EveryDollar will help you budget for your home makeoverâbecause even cheap furniture items can add up.
So, there you have it, guys. While the Joneses brag about their pricey furniture and expensive interior designer, you can rest easy (on your discounted bed frame) knowing your home looks just as good even though you spent half the amount of money they did.
